Kancho in Korea

A lot of people have been wishing me well about my trip to Korea, but some (really just one person) thinks that it is not such a good idea. It’s a co-worker, but not someone whom I work with everyday. I just see this person around at the school. Anyway, she asked me if I wanted the phone number of a friend of her’s who had visited Korea. I asked her did this person have something positive or negative to say. The co-worker told me that it was mostly negative, and I quickly told her that she didn’t need to give me the number! I know that there are things that I may not like or will have to get used to in Korea. I researched enough and know enough about life to know that anywhere on earth will have it’s positives and negatives. I don’t know all of the positives nor do I know all of the negative associated with living in Korea. I do know that I have a desire to see the world and teaching in Korea will provide me with good international experience to make a living while I travel. I could move to a number of other places, but from what I have seen Korea has one of the best packages. To be perfectly honest, I don’t have many expectations! I am going to do this with an open mind!

For example, I was reading someone’s blog about Ulsan, my second choice for placement in Korea, and he wrote about the practice of Kancho in Korea. Someone actually tries to stick a finger into your butt! That is disgusting, and I will try to avoid THAT from happening as much as I possibly can. I know, however, that it is done; it’s a prank that kids usually do for fun. I think that it is better to be aware than to be unaware. They also do it in Japan, and it is extremely popular in Japan! There is even a TV show in which the host does it to random people in the audience. At least that’s what I read on Wikipedia. Will that keep me from going to Japan? I don’t think so…It is just important to have realistic expectations and be ready to find out some stuff about a place that you may not be cool with at all.
