North Korea in the News

North Korea has been in the news a lot lately, and it is scary that this country is toying with nuclear arms! Will that keep me from going to South Korea? No. However, I am concerned about this turn of events. I was also concerned about getting the Swine Flu over there. I am almost afraid to tell people that I am moving to South Korea, because it sounds so crazy, in light of current events there. I guess that I am a crazy risk-taker (not really) if a war breaks out, I will stay in the U.S. I am tired of war… We have been at war with Iraq forever. I just would rather be home in my own surrounding just in case something break out, but I hope that everything will be okay. Let’s all pray for peace! What do you all think about this situation in North Korea? Are you other English teachers still planning to go to South Korea?

I’m going through exactly what you’re going through. I’ve been making plans to move to South Korea in August and will keep my eyes on the news. I’ve been so excited and am really sad/mad that this is happening.

    Good luck!

    Hi Korea-Diva!

I have applied to EPIK for August 2009 as well and yes the events happening in North Korea are very frightening! however I do believe in the power of prayer as well. Yes let’s pray for peace!

p.s. this is not my real name :) I am kind of cautious about the internet that way. but if we both end up in South Korea – or both in Busan! – maybe we will meet each other!

    Hey there,

Same here…that was also one of the questions my friend was asking me the other day. But I will still go…its now or never for me…i don’t think anything big will happen. the world is on N.Korea…no need to worry too much!

Have you guys gotten you official contracts yet?

Hi there! I understand your anxiety too…I always feel a little fearful before I set out on a big journey or the beginning of living abroad. But here’s what I’ve learned over the years. The news always makes it sound more dangerous than it really is to people back home– and I’ve been in some really hot spots at times…you’ll be fine and it will be the one of the best things you ever did!

I haven’t gotten the official contract in the mail yet. My recruiter stated that they like to send the contract and visa papers in bulk and not to look for that package until around June.

I think the south korean gov’t is more concerned about teachers coming from the U.S. and spreading the swine flu. I’ve heard some foreign teachers were quarantined because of this fear.

I wouldn’t worry about the north korean issue. both sides of the peninsula have been at odds with each other for over 5 decades so this is nothing new…

Just to update, i received my notice of appointment from EPIK last week. And yes, I got Busan! I’ve already handed 1 signed copy of the contract to the korean consulate here in houston. Im expected to get my visa on tuesday. Since i sent my docs in mid-may, im sure KoDiva got her preferred location as well. I hope everyone get their desired location too.
